Shubh Mangal Saavdhan - This one stands out

Bhumi Pednekar aspires to be the runaway bride like they show in Bollywood movies. But the guy chasing her, Ayushmann Khurrana, does not muster enough courage to approach her. When he finally does, he first runs into a bear and then a peculiar problem, that of performance anxiety.

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan is set during an interesting period - between engagement and marriage - during which Bhumi and Ayushmann are trying to discover their love for each other. There's plenty of that, but the lack of intimacy stands out and adds to the pressure. While Bhumi accepts Ayushmann the way he is, he feels guilty at not being able to rise to the occasion. That obviously leads to a strain in their relationship.

What complicates matters is when the two families involved get to know of his problem. The film tackles an unusual subject in a hilarious way and offers several laughs with its witty and often more-than-one-meaning dialogues. Despite dealing with a peculiar issue, not once does the 120-minute movie come across as crass or dirty. In fact, the writing is top-class with some creative minds in great form.

In a brazen way, the film also addresses common prejudices and conservative beliefs prevalent in society. But it does not go overboard ever. Only during the second half when matters get a bit serious between the two families and the couple does the film slack a bit. But it pulls back well and early enough to make it a breezy entertainer.

The performances are superb from both the leads. Ayushmann is effortless as a simpleton whose manliness is questioned by quite a few. It's one of his best performances to date. Bhumi is her competent self and shows why she's one of the most promising actors around who chooses different subjects.

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan is a quirky take on an important aspect of a relationship but does not try too hard to make a point. The film is a clean entertainer and a light romcom that is sure to make you laugh out loud.
